Dr. Patel grew up in Texas and studied at the University of Texas at Arlington. In 1996, he graduated as a member of the Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society with a doctor of optometry degree from the University of Houston. Dr. Patel completed a residency in Hospital-Based and Geriatric Eyecare at the Portland VA Medical Center. During his residency, Dr. Patel served as a clinical instructor to interns from two colleges of optometry. Patients appreciate his relaxed, comfortable manner, and enjoy his enthusiasm in teaching. Dr. Patel has provided hours of clinical procedures workshops for the Oregon and Alberta, Canada Optometric Associations. He has volunteered his skills in Thailand and the Special Olympics program in Oregon. Dr. Patel also served as the clinical examiner for the National Boards of Optometry, as a consultant to the Portland VA Medical Center, and is Adjunct Faculty at Pacific University College of Optometry. He is a member of various professional organizations and was the past president of the SW Society of the Optometric Physicians of WA, where he was awarded the Special Distinction Award for his contributions to optometry in WA. He is a frequent contributing author to Review of Optometric Business, and serves on the professional speakers team for CooperVision. Dr. Patel is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry.  Fellows of the American Academy of Optometry are entitled to use the designation FAAO. The designation—FAAO—means they are recognized by their colleagues as knowledgeable and experienced professionals who have met the high standards of professional competence in a broad range of issues related to eye care.  Less than 10% of the practicing optometrists in the United States are Fellows. He enjoys tennis, travel, and exploring the NW with his wife and three boys.
